Solar attic fans.

Solar-powered attic ventilation runs for free, runs hottest when you need it most, and extends the life of every roof material below it. We install with proper sizing, code-compliant flashing, and zero electrical-permit complexity.

Why ventilate the attic

A well-vented attic
lasts a decade longer.

Summer attics in Sonoma, Marin, and Napa County routinely hit 150°F. That heat radiates down into the living space (raising AC bills) and bakes the underside of the roofing material from below (shortening shingle and underlayment life). A solar attic fan moves the hot air out before either consequence compounds.

Winter attics in the North Bay have the opposite problem — moisture buildup from interior humidity rising into the attic. Without proper ventilation, that moisture condenses on cold roofing material and drives wood rot in the rafters. The same fan that cools in summer ventilates in winter.

Solar-powered installs avoid the electrician trip and the conduit run. The fan generates its own power, runs hardest in direct sun (exactly when needed), and stops when not needed. We install with the proper roof flashing, in the right location for the attic geometry, and to manufacturer-spec roof penetration standards.

How we install
Attic volume measured, fan CFM sized correctly
Roof location selected for both solar exposure and attic flow
Manufacturer-spec flashing — never sealant alone
Existing intake ventilation verified (soffit vents) or supplemented
Bird and rodent screen on the fan outlet
Warranty registration filed with manufacturer
Photographic before/after of the install
Why install

What a solar attic fan actually does.

Benefit 01

Lowers attic temperatures

Properly sized solar attic fans routinely drop peak summer attic temperatures from 140-160°F to 90-110°F. That delta translates to lower interior AC load and longer roof material life.

Benefit 02

Extends roof material life

Asphalt shingles, underlayment, and roof sheathing all age faster under sustained high-temp attic conditions. Ventilation extends the practical lifespan of every layer.

Benefit 03

Reduces AC load

Cooler attic = less radiant heat through the ceiling = less work for the AC. Most homeowners notice the upstairs feels more comfortable within days of install.

Benefit 04

Prevents winter moisture buildup

The same fan that cools in summer prevents winter condensation, which drives mold and wood rot in the rafters and sheathing.

Benefit 05

No electrical work

Solar-powered means no electrician trip, no permit for the wiring, no conduit run through the attic. Simpler install, lower total cost.

Benefit 06

Solar tax credit eligibility

Solar attic fans typically qualify for the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (30% through 2032). We document for the filing.

Install details

What separates a good install from a leak waiting to happen.

Proper flashing, not just sealant

Any roof penetration that relies only on sealant will leak within 3-5 years. We install with manufacturer-spec flashing that locks into the roofing material correctly.

Correct location for attic flow

A fan installed in the wrong spot pulls air through the path of least resistance instead of through the whole attic. We site the fan for actual ventilation across the full space.

Adequate intake ventilation

A powered exhaust fan with no intake creates negative pressure that can pull conditioned air from the living space into the attic. We verify or supplement soffit/eave intake.

Wildlife exclusion

Solar fans need bird and rodent screens at the outlet. Without them, the fan housing becomes a nesting site within a season.

When to install

Signs your attic needs ventilation.

Any single sign on this list is worth a phone call. Two or more is worth booking an inspection this week.

01
Upstairs of the home feels meaningfully warmer than downstairs in summer
02
Attic feels uncomfortably hot when accessed in summer (above 130°F)
03
Visible condensation, water staining, or mildew on attic framing in winter
04
Roof material aging faster than expected (shingle granule loss, curling)
05
AC bills rising year-over-year with no other obvious cause
06
Existing passive vents (gable, ridge) appear undersized for attic volume
07
Re-roof planned in the next 1-2 years (best time to add ventilation)
08
You qualify for the federal solar tax credit and want to use it
How an install works

What a solar attic fan install looks like.

Site visit and sizing
Step 01

Site visit and sizing

We measure the attic volume, assess existing intake ventilation, identify the right roof location, and quote the install. Fixed pricing in writing.

Roof penetration and flashing
Step 02

Roof penetration and flashing

Roof opening cut precisely to fan size, manufacturer flashing installed with the roof material (under the upper course, over the lower course), bird screen seated.

Solar panel and walkthrough
Step 03

Solar panel and walkthrough

Solar panel aligned for peak summer exposure, fan operation tested, warranty registered with manufacturer, written report of install with photos.

Payment plans

Federal Residential Clean Energy Credit covers 30%.

Solar attic fan installations typically qualify for the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit through 2032. We provide the qualifying-product documentation for your IRS Form 5695 filing.
