Chimney sweeping.

The mechanical sweep that pulls creosote, soot, and obstructions out of the flue — the only proven defense against chimney fire ignition. Drop-cloth protected, vacuum-attached, no-mess service.

How creosote starts a fire

Creosote is the
fuel chimney fires need.

Every wood fire you light deposits a layer of unburned hydrocarbons inside the chimney flue. Over weeks and seasons of burning, that residue accumulates — first as a powdery soot (Stage 1), then as a tarry crust (Stage 2), then as a glazed glass-like coating (Stage 3). All three stages burn. Stage 3 burns explosively.

Chimney sweeping is the mechanical process of removing those deposits before they accumulate to a dangerous depth. CSIA recommends sweeping any time the buildup reaches 1/8 of an inch — which is typically once per heating season for normal use, twice for heavy use, more often for unseasoned wood or smoldering burn patterns.

We don't make a mess. Every Heart's Chimney sweep is drop-cloth protected from the firebox out to your hearth rug, with a HEPA-filtered vacuum running continuously on the firebox to keep airborne particulate out of the living space.

How we sweep
CSIA-trained technician — every visit
Drop-cloth + plastic sheeting from firebox to hearth
HEPA-vacuum running continuously during sweep
Mechanical brush sized to your specific flue
Smoke chamber + shelf swept (most companies skip this)
Damper cleaned and tested for proper seal
Cap and crown inspected during process
Why sweep annually

What sweeping actually does.

Benefit 01

Removes chimney fire fuel

No creosote = no chimney fire. The math is that simple. Annual mechanical sweep is the only reliable way to keep creosote depth below the danger threshold.

Benefit 02

Restores proper draft

A creosote-coated flue is a constricted flue. Removing the buildup restores the airflow your fireplace was engineered for — faster light, hotter fire, less smoke spillage.

Benefit 03

Reduces smoke odor

That faint smoky smell that hangs around the house in summer? Usually creosote residue absorbing humidity. Annual sweeping eliminates it.

Benefit 04

Extends appliance life

Sweeps that include inspection catch worn gaskets, deteriorated refractory panels, and failing dampers before they require full replacement.

Benefit 05

Reveals system condition

A sweep is also a visual inspection. We see the flue from the inside — and document any deterioration, cracking, or unusual wear patterns.

Benefit 06

Insurance compliance

Most homeowner policies require annual maintenance on active wood-burning systems. Our service receipt and report serve as documentation.

Safety considerations

What we look for while we sweep.

Glazed (Stage 3) creosote

Hard, glassy, tar-like deposits that mechanical brushing alone cannot remove. We identify it during sweep and recommend the appropriate chemical or thermal treatment.

Flue obstruction

Animal nests, fallen mortar, leaf debris, and bird carcasses are common discoveries during fall sweeping. We remove them and document the entry point.

Damper failure

If the damper doesn't seal, the chimney is leaking conditioned air all summer and pulling outside air in. We test, clean, and recommend repair if needed.

Flue tile cracks and joint deterioration

Visible during sweep — we document, photograph, and recommend Level 2 video scan if the damage warrants deeper investigation.

Signs you need a sweep

When to book a chimney sweep.

Any single sign on this list is worth a phone call. Two or more is worth booking an inspection this week.

01
You haven't had your chimney swept this calendar year and you burn wood
02
Creosote buildup is visibly more than 1/8 of an inch (flashlight check)
03
Your fireplace smokes more than it used to during normal use
04
There is a strong odor of soot or smoke in the house, especially in summer humidity
05
You can see active dripping or staining where the chimney meets the ceiling
06
Smoke spills out into the room when you light the fire
07
You burn unseasoned or wet wood frequently (high creosote risk)
08
You've recently moved into a home with a fireplace and don't know the service history
How a sweep works

What to expect on sweep day.

Protect the space
Step 01

Protect the space

Drop-cloth and plastic sheeting from the firebox outward, HEPA vacuum on the firebox, hearth rug covered. Your home stays clean.

Sweep + inspect
Step 02

Sweep + inspect

Mechanical brush sized to the flue, ash and creosote vacuumed continuously, smoke chamber and damper cleaned, full visual inspection of accessible components.

Clean up + walkthrough
Step 03

Clean up + walkthrough

We remove all drop-cloths, vacuum the firebox interior, and walk you through what we saw. If we found anything needing repair, you get the report photo'd and quoted before we leave.

Payment plans

Pair your sweep with an annual inspection — bundled pricing.

Sweep + Level 1 inspection bundled together is the most popular maintenance package we sell. Ask about the combined rate when you book — usually a meaningful savings vs. booking the two services separately.

Common questions

Chimney Sweeping — frequently asked.

Typically 45-75 minutes for a standard masonry chimney, longer for systems with offsets or unusual configurations. Speed is not the metric — we sweep thoroughly.

Ready when you are
